Chapter Fourteen

The following week, Mason looked up to see their account manager Jake in his office door. “Got a minute?” Jake asked.

“Sure. Come on in.”

Mason turned away from his computer to face Jake across his desk. Jake took a seat and leaned forward, his eyebrows pulled together. “I have a problem.”

Mason nodded and waited. Of course he had a problem. Everybody had problems. And they brought them all to him. He wanted to ask why Jake wasn’t talking to Sloane, who technically was his superior, but whatever, he’d hear him out and if Sloane needed to be involved, he’d let her know.

Even before he became executive creative director he’d learned from one of the best that while the CD was the bedrock of a great agency, he couldn’t take on everyone’s problems. Ask some questions. Probe a little deeper. Make them think. Make them solve their own fucking problems.

“I called Steve at Astoria to set up a meeting to pitch them the new ideas Owen and Ravi came up with.” Jake’s forehead wrinkled up. “They want Bailey to be at the meeting.”

Jake said this as if they’d requested he bring a goat to the meeting.

“Apparently she met with them with you…?” he continued. “And they think she has something to do with this account. I don’t get it.”

Mason turned this over in his head. Hmm. “Did they say why they want her there?”

“They said she got who they are. And she impressed them with her ideas about targeted media placement.”

Mason rubbed his chin. “Yeah.” Then he shrugged. “So take her to the meeting with you.”

“What?” Jake’s eyes widened. “That’s crazy. She doesn’t know anything about this.”

“She’s smart. Eager to learn. If the client likes her, take advantage of that. Jesus.” He grimaced. “Ravi and Owen didn’t exactly impress them at that last meeting. We’re still trying to recover from that.”

“Yeah, I know. That shouldn’t have happened.”

“No.” Mason narrowed his eyes at Jake. “It shouldn’t have. From the sounds of it, none of you were on the same page.”

Jake heaved a sigh. “Those guys at Astoria have no clue what they want.”

“That is probably true.” Mason leaned back. “However, Bailey figured it out. She didn’t realize what she’d honed in on, but she got how they see themselves. Their values. So take her with you. What’ll it hurt?”

“It could hurt a lot! What if she says something stupid—?”

“She is not stupid.” Mason realized those words probably came out sharper than necessary.

“That’s not what I meant,” Jake hastened to clarify. “I just meant, she hasn’t been involved in this project. And she might screw up.”

“How?” Mason frowned at Jake. “Your creatives have come up with the ideas that you’re pitching. Unless she trashes the ideas in front of the client, like what happened with the guys last time, how can she screw up?” He shrugged. “So before you all meet with the client again, she comes to our meeting where you guys show me what you’re pitching, we all agree on which are the best ideas, give her a little coaching on how to handle herself, and boom—happy client.
